Moldova Embassy

One of the most interesting things about my recent trip to Washington, DC has been tracking down where I was during my strolls through the neighborhood.  I was just taking  photographs of things that caught my eye–as always, and not in search of any particular place most of the time.  Often, due to the congestion of traffic and/or people, and the very density of the buildings, it would be impossible to actually get in position to take a full photograph of a building without major interference.

The Embassy for the Republic of Moldova is located on a busy corner.  The Beaux Arts building was constructed in 1898 and was the private residence of US Agricultural Secretary James Wilson (wikipedia.org).

Moldova, bordered by Romania and Ukraine, became an independent and sovereign state August 27, 1991.  Formal relations were established with the US in 1993, and the embassy located to the current property in the Sheridan-Kalorama Historic District in 1998–100 years after its construction.

Moldova is 98% Eastern Orthodox Christian in population.  On December 6, 2012, the Senate passed H.R. 6156, repealing the Jackson-Vanik Amendment and authorized extension of Permanent Normal Trade Relations to Moldova (http://www.sua.mfa.md/about-embassy-en/).
