Day 3: Water control step 1 completed

At the end of the ramp going out into the yard, there is a short section of concrete walk, which was generally covered by mud, followed by bare dirt as the rock repeatedly washed into a corner. Rock on top of the drainpipe from the French drain will provide a secure cover for the drainpipe, as well as eliminate dogs and humans having to walk through rainwater, and hopefully no more washing of mud onto the sidewalk.

The drain pipe (with holes in it to allow water to drain in) runs the length of the trench, with the rock covering the top of the trench, which will help water drain into the pipe. Once the wall is rebuilt and the new fascia up, new gutters will catch the runoff from the roof and drain down a pipe directly into the French drain cover here at the end. From there, it will flow out the drainpipe, under the fence, and downhill instead of accumulating in the yard next to the house.

Monday, the crew will build a “false wall” inside the room to support the rafters while they tear off the exterior siding and replace all the support posts and replace exterior siding with fiber cement siding. Whatever the siding was used by “the other guy” was not waterproof and water absorbed into the siding, which resulted in soggy siding that rotted and allowed water to penetrate the walls. Let’s just be kind here and say “he did not know what he was doing” and let it go at that. Once again, I thought getting a home inspection before you signed the contract was to find out if the building is safe and worth the cost. I think our inspector missed a whole lot of things…just sayin’. They will be busy with the exterior for a while, so I will turn my focus to what to do on the inside so I will be ready when they are.

Reggie’s “new” toy

Ron was very understanding about the drain connector, and turns out, it was cheaper than his real dog toys. Reggie is still fascinated and it is quite the workout to get him to focus on his job instead of sniffing everything again, but hopefully the new will wear off soon.

It was cool and I took advantage and sat out for a bit after a heavy day of more research. The yard is still full of downed tree limbs and this is my “cleaning up the front yard” hobby. I will be on a little road trip to the delta tomorrow and Saturday for the research project. It has been a while and I am looking forward to it! All ya’ll have a good end of the week!

  2. Let us know if the French drain works as planned. I’ve considered adding one on one side of our house.
